Classroom Walkthrough's - Learning Walks and Talk

Learning walks and talk can be great for those observing as well as those being observed.

Look for focus areas;

  • evidence of professional learning training

  • guided reading groups

  • differentiated instruction

  • student engagement

  • higher order questioning

  • use of technology

  • classroom management

  • the learning environment and classroom setup

  • evidence of learning

  • visible learning

  • ESL strategies implemented to enable English language learners to access content

Decide prior to going in to observe, what are we looking for. How we will record it? Will we stand and roam or talk to students? Take notes on to what extent did I see that focus area.

After - debrief - discuss evidence, everyone shares, be objective, not judgemental, comments kept confidential, and consider whether will you give feedback to the teacher or not. Thank the observed teacher for their willingness to open their classroom to others.

Does your school participate in Learning Walk and Talks? Have you found them useful? We would love if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
