World Gratitude Day 2024
Gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful practices we can incorporate into our lives. When it was introduced to me many years ago, I was in a phase of my life where I could hardly find one thing to be grateful for, let alone five items to list alongside the bullet points in front of me. However, with time, consistency, and an open mind, I surprised myself with the number of things I was grateful for each day. Being grateful shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s already here, and in doing so, it naturally makes us kinder — to ourselves and to others. And I can vouch for that.
On World Gratitude Day 2025, September 21, we’re invited to pause, reflect, and celebrate the things, people, and moments that give our lives meaning. It doesn’t have to be complicated — gratitude shines most in the small, everyday gestures.
Here are a few gentle ways you can celebrate this year:
1. Start With Gratitude Journaling
Take five minutes in the morning or evening to reflect on what you’re grateful for. If you like structure, try a gratitude journal (there are plenty of handy apps too - I use Three Good Things). Simply writing down three things you’re thankful for each day can shift your mindset and set a positive tone. I usually complete mine before bedtime, however you can do make a notes at any time of the day.
2. Create a Gratitude Playlist
Music can lift moods and bring people together. Put together a playlist on Spotify of thank-you songs or tunes that make you feel appreciative and light. Share it with a friend or family member — it’s like sending a smile through sound. We often have our chill music playing throughout the weekend or during dinner and one of my favourites is Gratitude by Sol Rising and Brandon Hargrave.
3. Try a Gratitude Meditation
Even just five minutes of quiet reflection can work wonders. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply, and bring to mind the people and experiences you’re grateful for. Let the feeling of appreciation grow, and notice how calm and connected you feel afterward. I can recommend this gratitude meditation from The Science of Happiness Podcast I listen to. Few years old now but still a good one.
4. Share Words of Thanks
Sometimes the simplest way to celebrate gratitude is to express it. Send a quick message to someone you love, write a note to a colleague, or thank the barista who makes your morning coffee. Words of thanks cost nothing but can brighten someone’s day immeasurably.
5. Practice Everyday Kindness
Kindness is gratitude in action. Hold the door open, give a genuine compliment, or offer a helping hand. Each small gesture is a ripple of appreciation sent out into the world.
World Gratitude Day 2025 is a reminder that slowing down, appreciating what we have, and sharing kindness doesn’t just change our own outlook — it changes the world around us. Start small, practice often, and let gratitude be your guide.
How will you practice gratitude this September? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
